Local Attractions to Huelva: Lumionous Huelva
With an extension of more than ten thousand square kilometres that gently ascend from the undisturbed beaches to the leafy hills, Huelva receives the last sunrays of the southern part of Spain, in the extreme southwest of Europe, 3.200 hours of sunlight give this province -which borders on Portugal - the opportunity to enjoy long days.
The province has a very agreeable climate, the temperatures being softened by the Atlantic Ocean, that bathes the coast from Ayamonte to Doñana, along more than 120 kilometres. The annual average temperature is 18º C, in January, the coldest month, it can come down to 12º and during the summer months temperatures normally are around 25ºC. Moreover, during at least five months, rain is totally absent.
This is a quiet province, where the average density of population is 40 inhabitants per square kilometre (142 inh/km2 in Malaga, 535 in Vizcaya, 230 in Germany, and 246 in the United Kingdom). It is one of the few tourist locations where one can find much scenery with almost no human presence, and it offers safe environments, which makes it very adequate for family tourism.
Nearby Huelva
During the last few years, improvement of communications has brought the province nearer to the most important transportation centres. Which means that the tourist locations of Huelva are at most only a three hours flight away from the mayor European cities, using the airports of Faro and Seville.
Only a one-hour drive on the highway separates Huelva from Seville and there is a similar distance between Huelva and Faro. Apart form this, steps are being taken towards the construction of the province´s own airport.
As for railway transportation, the province is only four hours away from Madrid and it is connected with the rest of Spain and with the international net through Seville; a high-speed connection with the capital of Andalusia will be constructed in the near future.
Natural Huelva
In this part of the country, virgin nature is one of the most important treasures; one third of the total surface is protected area in one way or another. Huelva has one National Park, two nature parks, eight natural protected areas, three nature reserves and five nature monuments.
Here you can find unique scenery, as for instance the marshes, virgin dunes, pastureland and gallery-forests and these areas are inhabited by such emblematic species as the Iberian lynx, the imperial eagle, the black stork or the black vulture.
The National Park and the Nature Park Doñana, with a total surface of 50.720 hectares and 26.540 hectares of protected peripheral areas are the largest protected extension in Spain and one of the most important ones in Europe due to its variety of fauna and flora.
The Nature Park Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, which recently received the European Charta of Sustainable Tourism, has an extension of more than 184.000 hectares, with many villages of archaic traditions, gastronomy and handicraft, that are also the cradle of the world´s most famous hams.
In spite of its s outhern geographical position, this is a province with extraordinary water resources. Embraced by two big rivers like the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir, many reservoirs, such as the Chanza and the Andévalo reservoirs, permit important agriculture and the province usually has surplus water resources even during very dry periods. This also gave birth to most valuable humid areas, especially along the coast, from Doñana to the marshes of Isla Cristina, not to forget the pool system of Palos and Las Madres, the Odiel Marshes, the El Portil Pool or the Rio Piedras marshes or the Rompido Sand Arrow.
