Local Attractions: The history of Santa Pola is that of the Mediterranean since men first set foot on this land. It begins with prehistoric remains in the Cueva de las Aranas, continues with the Iberian settlement from the 4th Century B.C. then moves to the Roman salting factory and the Casa Romana which gives us some idea of the splendour of the Roman settlement of Portus Illicitanus, then advances to the watchtower and the perfectly preserved 16th Century castle-fort in the centre of the town, until we reach the modern and peaceful town of today, the ideal place to live all year round. In the 19th Century the beaches were visited by the first bathers who would come from as far as Madrid. Now the 15 kms of coastline boasts blue flag beaches and certificates of environmental quality and continues to be enjoyed year in year out by thousands of visitors and residents alike. Fishing is the most economic activity along with tourism. Its safe bays bring together international specialists of all kinds of water sports throughout the year. The area is also famous for its gastronomy which caters for all tastes and nationalities - it is the birthplace of numerous master chefs. Other essential visits are the Salt Lakes, nature reserves, lighthouse, seaside promenade, aquarium and Sea Museum not to mention the seaside promenade. There are many shops and essential amenities in the town and a bustling market on Mondays and Saturdays.
